Monday, March 23, 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that South Africa will enter a nationwide lockdown for 21-days with effect from midnight on Thursday 26 March 2020. The president made this decision based on the number of people infected by Corona virus increasing every day. “This is a decisive measure to save millions of South Africans from infection and save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
Most South Africans are in fear and uncertainty of how things will turn out during this time and after the 21 days of the lockdown. This is exacerbated by the current economic situation as well as the unemployment rate in SA; according to Statistics South Africa’s (StatsSA) there are 6.7-million people living in South Africa that are unemployed.
Companies are adjusting to using technology and letting employees work from home, however, some workers are worried about retrenchments and jobseekers wonder if they will find a new position.
