Monday, March 23, 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that South Africa will enter a nationwide lockdown for 21-days with effect from midnight on Thursday 26 March 2020. The president made this decision based on the number of people infected by Corona virus increasing every day. “This is a decisive measure to save millions of South Africans from infection and save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

Most South Africans are in fear and uncertainty of how things will turn out during this time and after the 21 days of the lockdown. This is exacerbated by the current economic situation as well as the unemployment rate in SA; according to Statistics South Africa’s (StatsSA) there are 6.7-million people living in South Africa that are unemployed.

Companies are adjusting to using technology and letting employees work from home, however,  some workers are worried about retrenchments and jobseekers wonder if they will find a new position.

Recruitment companies are doing the best that they can by continuing with recruiting with the help of technology. We’re taking advantage of people being in lockdown at home, having more time to look for jobs and send out CVs.  If you’re in the market and haven’t used this time to optimise your CV and distribute it, then we recommend you do so as soon as possible.  Make no mistake, recruiters can (and are) still sourcing CVs online for potential candidates.

Instead of in-person interviews, online interviews can be carried out whereby candidates can make use of Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp and other video platforms. This brings with it a host of advantages like not having to worry about traffic getting to an interview and avoiding scheduling conflicts such as candidates being stuck in meetings or busy with their daily schedules. Candidates will have more time to prepare and will be interviewed in the comfort of their home.
